REAL Margherita Pizza

This recipe uses a store bought organic thin bread crust. There are so many healthy ready made crusts available now to choose from including gluten free. If you prefer a cauliflower crust, Green Giant now makes one that you can find in most grocery stores. I’ll leave the crust up to you! (P.S. Wewalka is the brand that I most often use for my Margherita Pizzas)

Step one is to preheat your oven to the temperature that your purchased crust requires.

Next, prepare the sauce:

  • Chop 3 cloves of fresh garlic and sauté in a pan with a generous drizzle (about 3 tablespoons) of light flavor olive oil over medium heat for about 3 mins

  • Stir in 1 can of organic crushed tomatoes

  • Most recipes call for Red Pepper Flakes but I prefer to use Cayenne Pepper in mine. Your call but if either way about 2 - 3 pinches of either will work great

  • Add Salt and Pepper to taste

  • Lastly, I like to add a bit of honey to mine. Yes, honey. Most tomato based sauces actually have a bit of sugar in them so to keep the flavor traditional, I add about 2 teaspoons of honey.

In the end, you want a sauce that’s rather thick. Nothing is worse than a watery sauce that won’t cling to your crust and pools up on one end.

For the toppings:

I generally use one entire ball of sliced mozzarella for mine. Food & Wine voted Tenuta Vannulo the best buffalo mozzarella. But not too easy to find…

So if you would like to try a Vegan mozzarella, here’s a link to a great option.

I’m also using one large slicer tomato cut into rounds

And about 8 leaves of fresh basil from my window sill basil plant

Lastly a sprinkling of olive oil, salt and oregano!
