You Are Worth It - How to Set A Goal

I am a hopeless romantic.  I love that part of myself although I may not always share it with the world. I find that when I connect with that part of myself that I feel more “me” than any other time. That probably plays a big part in the fact that my favorite holiday is Valentines Day.

When trying to set an important food related goal for the year, I like to time it’s completion around the culmination of Valentines Day. Valentines Day is so much more than just chocolates and lingerie. Here are several reasons that Valentine’s Day works so well.

-       To be surrounded by the color red. Red has a spectacular range from the deep cherry color of passion found in the perfect glass of wine to the blush of a honeyscrisp apple. It is the perfect time to fall in love with the power of color in our food.

-       Not feeling particularly in love with your food? Try buying yourself some flowers but not the kind that come in an already made mixed bouquet. Buy a few different varieties and arrange them yourself and see if it sparks some creativity.

-        Romantic Movies. Watching a movie is cathartic. Catharsis is the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions. We all want these things and we all connect deeply with romance, hope and desire. Does your everyday life give you the chance to express that? If not, then find your pleasure in moments from your favorite movies. Purge some of those things that have been holding you back and causing your bad eating habits.

-        Gifts of raw emotion. For better or worse this holiday tends to conjures some of our deepest feelings.

-        It’s open to anyone. Relationships of all stages qualify. If you think you’re not in a relationship that counts then you’re wrong! We are all in a relationship with ourselves. Treat yourself with love.

-        It’s the perfect day of the year to set a goal. It does not conflict with other holidays where you may be pulled in different directions or striving to make others happy. If you’re looking to make a change just for you – Happy Valentines Day!

Now that you’ve got a date in mind, let’s talk about how to work towards that goal each day.

- COUNT IT DOWN. Using the advent calendar approach, get yourself psyched up each morning for another day closer to your goal day!

- Set some appointments. Make an appointment to get your hair and make-up done on which ever day you’ve chosen to meet your goal on. In between now and that time, play around with ideas of what you want to have done to keep that motivation going!

- Plan your posts. So you’ve got a goal date set and you’re going to get all dolled up, of course you’ll want to share your results with the world. Start planning what you want your message or instagram post to be. This helps to give you that extra bit of accountability because subconsciously you’ll feel like other’s are already watching your next moves.
