Detox On A Budget

When I tried my first detox I chose Sakara Life’s Level II Reset. It definitely didn’t hurt that it was endorsed by a bunch of Victoria Secret models as their diet of choice. However my overall experience with it proved that nothing delivered is going to be as fresh as what you can make at home. The overpriced food was icky and soggy and the only thing really worth eating were the daily broths which I could probably make for less than 25 cents at home.

Expensive Detoxes are OUT!

Practical and affordable advice is IN!

A true detox is going to take a lot more than 7 days. What your body is holding onto and why is unique to you and your problems. You might not be able to shed any pounds until you make certain decisions that allow you to to release those chains.

Detoxing your life is more than just making the choice to eat a salad instead of a hamburger. My advice is to look at it as a way to simplify your life. Study ingredients not to make grocery shopping more laborious but rather to make your future choices a cinch. There will come a day soon when you no longer have to read a label or think about what you need to eat.

Better food for Less Cost?

Yes, please!

Start with these tips:

Check your last grocery receipt for what you most commonly buy and do the following checks:

  • Use an online grocery shopping tool (example: Kroger Click List) to fill a cart and look at what you added; how many items on the list can be used to make a complete meal (protein / fat / fiber)? This should make up the MAJORITY of your cart.

  • Notice what percentage of your overall weekly grocery budget is going towards alcohol, snacks or sweets?

  • How economical is your grocery bill? Can you make changes to get down to a daily food budget number that is consistent?

I can still have the treats I love?

Yes, a sustainable diet consists of a variety of foods that make up your palette.

Next make a quick list of the places that you most commonly eat out and do the following checks:

  • Pick one thing on the menu that you can’t live without

  • Pick one thing on the menu that you could easily swap (example: Soda for unsweet tea OR carry a smarter drink in your car)

  • Show me the healthiest thing on the menu. Have you noticed that item before or did this open your mind to another option?

Make ONE Smart Swap A day

Instead of a milk shake to go with those fries, how about a protein shake with whipped cream and a cherry on top!

Lastly make a list of how many times per week you eat in a style of convenience and do the following checks:

  • How many of your convenience meals are planned vs. spontaneous?

  • During the times that you’re eating convenience foods (pizza, take-out, vending machine, snacking instead of a meal) what is motivating you to chose that option? Is it advertising, stress or exhaustion, habit or enjoyment [the treat yourself! mentality] ?
