Veggie Dogs

In the 5th grade on Wednesdays we would be allowed to purchase lunch from a hot dog cart stationed about a block over from the school. At that point in my life I don’t think I’d ever tasted spicy mustard before as we only ever ate Heinz yellow mustard at home.

I can still remember unwrapping the foil around the hot dog on what seemed like an exceptionally cold day and tasting that spicy sweet perfection for the very first time.

I never again had a backyard BBQ or food truck version even come close to that first time until I started creating my own out of veggie dogs.

My go-to brand is Yves “The Good Dog” but really any store bought veggie dog will work if cooked just right.

I prefer to grill mine on the back porch and serve with classic potato chips and all the ‘fixins’. Some preferred toppings include:

  • Chopped onions

  • Jalapenos

  • Ketchup

  • Raw honey mustard (see below)

  • Pickle relish

Raw Honey Mustard

  • 1/4 cup of raw honey

  • 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar

  • 1/4 cup of organic dijon mustard

  • 1/4 cup of olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon of garlic salt

It’s always “Hot Dogs and Hamburgers”

However I’ve found that if you go beyond the basics on topping and condiments that Hot Dogs are the favorite.

Using skewers to grill up your onions, jalapenos and other fixings is a great way to bring out the flavor.

Spiral cutting is the way to go!

Try making a homemade rub from Garlic, Onion, Paprika, Coriander, Cumin and brushing on with some light olive oil.

Spiral cutting your dogs and placing on skewers will give you a better chance to slap on some additional flavor between the sections.
